The opening
Dusk. The sky is the colour of brass. Your caravan has stopped at the foot of a dune; camels kneel, traders murmur, children whisper. Your second-in-command, Ziya, crouches beside a water jug and does not look at you. "The third well had blood in it," she says. "Not animal. Not yet spoiled. Someone wants us dead before we reach the city." You have twelve souls, six camels, food for ten days, and a decision no one else will make. What do you do?
