The opening
Three hundred atmospheres. The viewport fogs, clears, fogs. Your lights pick out silt, then fish, then the clean vertical edge of a panel that has no business being at the bottom of the ocean. It is made of a metal your spectrometer does not know. It has a handle. Your oxygen is at six hours. The surface ship is at three hours comms-lag because of the interference in this trench. Your co-pilot has stopped breathing audibly. What do you do?
