The opening
You are in the basement of what used to be a hardware store. The radio on the shelf has been silent since day ninety. It just crackled. Not static — words. A voice, exhausted, repeating coordinates. You have half a can of beans, a map of four county roads, a knife, and a child sleeping in the corner who is not yours. You have learned, over four hundred days, that a broadcasting voice is the second worst thing in the world. The first is ignoring one. What do you do?
